Where Bristol City sit in the Championship away table

Bristol City’s impressive seven-match unbeaten run came to a halt at the weekend when they suffered a 1-0 defeat on the road against automatic promotion hopefuls Burnley.

Zian Flemming's exquisite free-kick in the 16th minute decided the contest, in what was a largely one-sided contest with the Clarets squandering numerous opportunities to increase their advantage. It marked Burnley’s 21st clean sheet of the season and the impenetrable defensive record of goalkeeper James Trafford never really looked at risk of being threatened as the Robins failed to muster up a single shot on target.

"Burnley are a very good side with great depth, but I know we are capable of playing better so that's why there is frustration there. We blocked shots, put our bodies on the line and kept going to the end but we were sloppy at times and a bit careless with the ball.

"They created a lot of chances. As the games goes on, you think 'can we nick a point here', but it wasn't to be." Said Liam Manning, via BBC Sport.

Bristol City have a golden opportunity to get their play-off hunt back on track when they host Watford in their next contest but know that they must continue to pick up points on a routine basis on the road if they can realise their top six ambition. With that in mind, we take a look at Bristol City’s away record and how it compares to teams in the hunt for top six such as Coventry, West Brom and Middlesbrough.

What is Bristol City’s away record this season?

Bristol City have won just four of their 20 league matches away from home this season and are in desperate need of improvement if they are to secure their place in the top six and compete for promotion to the Premier League. The Robins are among the draw specialists in the division with nine of their games finishing level after 90 minutes, with only play-off rivals West Brom (10) picking up more draws on the road this season.

Liam Manning’s men have fallen to defeat seven times on their travels, with the most recent coming against Burnley at Turf Moor. They have scored just 21 times in 20 away games this term and have shipped 27, giving them a goal difference of -6. The Cider Army have an average points per game of 1.05 on their travels which is a stark contrast to their impressive average of 1.89 points per game when playing in front of the Ashton Gate faithful.

How does Bristol City’s away record compare to their play-off chasing rivals?

Top six contenders West Brom have also managed just four away victories this season but have picked up one extra draw than the Robins (10) while falling to defeat six times. They have scored 23 and conceded 23 in games away from the Hawthorns this season and have an average of 1.10 points per game on their travels.

Coventry City, who are on fire under Frank Lampard, have picked up six wins, five draws and nine defeats. Scoring 22 and conceding 22, giving them an average of 1.15 points per game. It would, however, be considerably higher if it was based solely on Lampard’s results.
