Maya Jama recently returned to screens as the glamorous host of ITV’s Love Island.  The stunning TV personality, 28, from Bristol, has come from humble beginnings as a radio presenter on Rinse FM and later moved onto a primetime slot on BBC Radio One.

She has since hosted a number of TV shows including the BRITs and MOBO awards. Maya has occasionally shared a glimpse into her family life with snaps alongside her lookalike mum posted to her almost 3 million Instagram followers.

Who is Maya Jama’s mum?

Maya Jama was born and raised in Bristol. Her mother Sadie gave birth to her at the age of just 18, making her 46-years-old now. Sadie named Maya after the much-loved American author, Maya Angelou.

Sadie is of Swedish descent, whilst Maya’s father, Hussein is of Somali descent. Sadie had her own taste of the limelight, when she starred alongside Maya in an episode of BBC’s All Round to Mrs Brown’s.

During the episode, everyone commented  that Sadie could be mistaken for  Maya’s sister. Whilst Mrs Brown discussed Sadie’s youthful looks, Maya joked: “I know, literally the bane of my childhood!”

What has Maya Jama said about her mother?

Although her relationship with her father is said to be distant, Maya has been open about her close relationship with her mother. She told the Evening Standard that she believes that the smaller age-gap between herself and her mother has brought them closer.

Maya explained: "She had me at 18, so our relationship was a bit different. I rebelled less because I was quite free. My mum’s always been like, ‘I want you to have your experiences—just tell me. I’m not going to judge you or shout at you.’’

Having said that, the Love Island host admits  that Sadie is known for taking the ‘cool mum’ vibe too far. She confessed: "She’s banned from my parties though. She gets too drunk.All my boyfriends and friends that were guys fancied her."

Maya also revealed in an interview with The Sun that she kept her Love Island role a secret from Sadie at first. She said: “I’m not a good liar. I didn’t tell my mum because she’d get too excited and tell people."

Is Maya Jama’s mum Sadie married?

Maya grew  distant from her father when she was young as he spent a lot of her childhood in prison. When she was 12-years-old, Maya stopped visiting her father and she went on to avoid any contact for the next 10 years.

Maya’s mum moved on and tied the knot with her long-term partner back in 2018. In September 2018, Maya took to Instagram to share some personal family snaps from her mum’s wedding.

She captioned the post: "Best day ever watching my mum marry her soulmate, one of the loveliest people I know (ft. The family. Last video is where I get it from) 18 years strong."
