Vincent Kompany believes Bristol City are a club going in the right direction after they fought hard against his Burnley side at Ashton Gate.

The Robins fought valiantly but could not secure a point against the recently crowned Championship winners. Manuel Benson opened the scoring with a wonder strike before Tommy Conway equalised but Jay Rodriguez scored moments later.

In the reverse fixture it was the same scoreline, and City contended well with a side ready for the Premier

League. Nigel Pearson’s side managed to finish the match strongly and put the Clarets under pressure with Andi Weimann nearly snatching a point but his header was ruled out for offside.

“I can completely see the plan of the club and where they’re going,” said Kompany in his assessment of the Robins in his post-match interview.

“They’ve got legs in the team, it’s the ABC of any team in modern football. “If you don’t have legs you can’t be in the game today after 75 minutes if you don’t have legs in the team.”

A statistical look at the game saw City have one shot on target from eight attempts and 41% of the possession, whilst Burnley had seven on target from 14 attempts, with 59% of the ball. Kompany’s side mustered up 586 passes and carved open the home defence on a few occasions but didn’t take some of their chances, whilst Max O’Leary made several good saves.

It is hopeful that City can contend for a playoff spot next season with investment in the summer. Nigel Pearson will have money to spend, but there is already a core of players that the team is being built around.

City were able to bring on the experience of Joe Williams, Nahki Wells and Andi Weimann, who replaced the youth of Tommy Conway and Alex Scott.

He said: “It must be a good time for the fans because you’ve got a lot of attacking players in the squad.

“It’s a club that I think has got something special going and the Championship is difficult but to do it with the resources they have the way they do, you can see they’re going in the right direction.”
