Bristol City have already gotten stuck into the transfer market after welcoming three new additions to the club ahead of another big season in the Championship. The Robins dipped into the summer funds to sign Ross McCrorie and Rob Dickie, but their third recruit Haydon Roberts joined on a free transfer from Brighton.

Not every signing needs to involve a big cash exchange — there are plenty of players out there who are available for free and we’re going to take a look at some Championship free agents who City could target this summer.

Bradley Dack

One of the hottest transfer window topics right now is focused on where Alex Scott might end up next season. Premier League clubs are falling over each other to try and sign the rising star but of course, this means the Robins will have to replace him.

If they scoop their desired £25 million for Scott, Bristol City could well go and splash that amount on a like-for-like replacement, but for now, considering free options wouldn’t hurt.

Bradley Dack is looking for a new club after his contract with Blackburn Rovers expired earlier this month. He’s an incredibly versatile player who can slot into any midfield role as well as up front and on either wing. He has 98 career goals and 65 assists, and contributed seven goals and three assists for Rovers last season.

Dack may not be a perfect Scott replacement but he would be a good recruit for the time being.

Adam Forshaw

Another potential midfield option is Adam Forshaw, who has been released from Leeds United. While he may not be a natural goalscorer, the 31-year-old would bring experience in abundance.

Forshaw won the Championship with Leeds during the 2019/20 season, and was a firm starter for the club before he picked up a hip injury.

Jake Livermore

Any club is wise to add more defensive options to their ranks, and Bristol City could benefit from some new personnel in this spce. The Robins conceded more goals (56) than they scored (55) in the Championship last season, so adding some new defensive-minded players to the ranks this summer couldn’t hurt.

Jake Livermore has left West Brom and offers a wealth of experience for any club he might join. With 216 appearances for Albion, 144 for Hull City, plus the fact he rose through the ranks to establish himself in the Spurs senior team shows how much he can offer.

Nampalys Mendy

Surprisingly, it’s very quiet on the transfer front for Nampalys Mendy right now, despite being free to snap up following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City. The Senegal international could be another smart recruit for Bristol City to help tighten up the bolts in defence, plus, his Premier League experience will be a valuable asset.

Tomas Vaclik

While we’re on the topic of defence, the Robins may need to address their goalkeeper situation. As it stands, Max O’Leary is their first choice between the sticks but should injury strike, his back-ups aren’t best equipped just yet to step up to the mark.

Harvey Wiles-Richards is yet to make an appearance for City and has just 10 senior appearances under his belt in his career so far, and his current contract runs out next year. Equally, Stefan Bajic has played just one match in red and spent the second half of last season out on loan.

Tomas Vaclik is available for free after leaving Huddersfield. The 34-year-old has played all over Europe, including Switzerland, Spain and Greece, and he has won the Europa League with Sevilla.

Joel Robles

Another veteran of the game who would bring valuable experience to Bristol City is Joel Robles who is out of contract after leaving Leeds. Similar to Vaclik, the Spaniard has spent time in Europe, including at Atlético Madrid but he is perhaps most remembered for his time with Everton.

Robles has won the Europa League twice, the Super Cup, and even the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic.
