Melvin Square: Huge police cordon in centre of Knowle West

All roads leading to Melvin Square in the centre of Knowle West were cordoned off due to a serious crash which left a woman injured at around 11.00am this morning (May 23).

Cordons went up on all the roads leading to the grass square surrounded by shops after the woman was hurt in the collision with a lorry on the square. A fish bar owner rushed out to help her.

Police then arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs

Bristol World contacted Avon and Somerset Police. A spokesperson said: “At just before 11am today (Tuesday 23 May), we were called by the ambulance service to attend a collision in Melvin Square, Bristol, involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

“The pedestrian, a woman, has been taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

“Further to the below, we can confirm a 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 10.51hrs to an incident in the Bristol area. A double-crew land ambulance was sent, and one individual was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary.”

First West of England issued an update for the number 90 bus service, which serves the Knowle West area.

It warned passengers that ‘due to the closure of Melvin Square, this service will be diverted via Salcombe Road, Daventry Road and Wedmore Vale. This means stops between Wedmore Vale and Ilminster Avenue will not be served in either direction. The route has since been restored.
