Today (March 1), councils in the Bristol region will be offering secondary school places to children for those starting Year 7 in September 2023. It follows an application process where parents picked out their preferences.
Parents now have until March 15 to accept the place, or appeal against the decision. An appeal would go before an independent panel where the council will be asked to explain why the first preference was not successful.
Schools across the region have been inspected by Ofsted, which gives an indication of the level of teaching provided. Out of the 33 inspected, most (28) are good, while three are outstanding and two require improvement.

5. Bradley Stoke Community School - Good
Rated ‘good’ in 2018, inspectors found that leaders and governors have ensured that pupils experience a highly effective, broad and balanced curriculum.
6. Broadlands Academy, Keynsham - Good
Another school to have gone from a ‘requires improvement’ rating to achieve a good score - although the last inspection was back in 2016. School leaders were then challenged to reduce inconsistency in the quality of teaching.
7. Bridge Learning Campus, Hartcliffe - Good
In 2021 Ofsted rated the school good - just three years after it was ‘inadequate’. ‘Trustees, governors and school leaders have maintained a relentless focus on school improvement,’ the report noted.
8. Bristol Brunel Academy - Good
Bristol Brunel was marked Good during an Ofsted visit in June 2013. A short follow up inspection was made in 2017 which determined it was still operating at a Good level. It stated: ‘Pupils are proud of their school and appreciate the positive impact the behaviour policy, ‘Right to Learn’, has on their progress.'
