The Bristol Old Vic has applied for permission to play recorded music in its outdoor seating area in King Street.

The 17 beach-style huts were introduced last April and have proved a success with people able to gather in small groups for a drink outside the venue.

The cabins are for up to six people and are inspired by different productions from the theatre’s history.

Under its current licence, the theatre can sell alcohol to people in the outdoor area - now it has applied for permission to play recorded music.

The music would be played at ‘a low level’ through four small speakers situated an equal distance apart within the seating area, the application states.

A spokesperson for the theatre told BristolWorld that it was ‘an extra way to tie the outdoor space more closely into the atmosphere inside the building’.

They added: “Currently our licence only covers indoor music so we need to amend it if possible.”

Music played would be themed around productions on at the time, or the season.

Bristol City Council will make a decision on the application for recorded music in the coming weeks.

The theatre’s next show is Dr Semmelweis, written by Stephen Brown and starring Mark Rylance.
