Ex-Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp to Manchester United star Paul Scholes to England Lioness hero Jill Scott - it was special day at Bristol Rovers’ Memorial Ground as celebrities and football stars turned out in support of club legend Marcus Stewart.
They all came to take part in an All Starts vs South West Legends game - all in a show of support to Marcus who is raising money for motor neurone disease (MND) charity Darby Rimmer Foundation after he was diagnosed with the disease.
And it wasn’t just the stars on show - 4,462 supporters turned up to watch the game, which also featured the likes of Dean Holdsworth, Dean Saunders, Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas and TV chef Dean Edwards.
The result - a 4-3 victory to the South West Legends - didn’t really matter in the whole scheme of things as people enjoyed the occasion more than anything. The crowd also heard from Marcus who took to the microphone during the event.
He said: “I know a lot of players have driven from different places to make the effort to come here. I’m so pleased that it’s at this stadium, I’m so pleased the weather’s brilliant. Please enjoy yourselves and I really appreciate you all coming here today to raise hopefully over £100,000.”
So far, almost £70,000 has been rasied. To donate, visit the fundraising page by clicking here.
