Joey Barton is hopeful that the goals will now be flowing for Scott Sinclair after the veteran striker’s winner sent Rovers into the hat for the second round of the Cup.

Barton’s side had laboured a little against League Two opponents but Sinclair showed his experience to dig out a win with a 65th minute goal.

Now the boss has his fingers crossed that this could spark a run for a player who began his career at the Memorial Stadium before leaving for Chelsea 17 years ago.

“Hopefully that’s the first of many goals for him,” said Barton. “I thought he was our best player, I thought he was excellent for us on the day.

“You don’t need speed if you have a quick mind. I think he has been a player who has been quick in the body and he’s looked after himself.

“He’ll only get better and if he’s enjoying it, it gives us a good opportunity to keep him beyond January (when his existing deal ends).”

Rovers are back in action on Saturday when they host Fleetwood who, in 15th, sit just a place and a point ahead of the Gas in the League One table.
