Nearly five years since leaving the Memorial Stadium, Coughlan has now taken the reins of a club in danger of being relegated to the sixth tier.

Former Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan has been unveiled as the new first-team manager of Boston United.

The 50-year-old found himself out of work this summer after he mutually agreed to leave Newport County in June. Four months on, the Irishman has dropped down a division to take on the reins at Boston, who recently parted company with Ian Culverhouse.

Coughlan inherits a side that are currently second from bottom in the National League and are seven points adrift of safety. Boston are currently winless in their last 11 league matches and so the former Gas boss has been tasked with turning their fortunes around.

A statement announcing his appointment on the official club website read: "Boston United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Graham Coughlan as the club's new first team manager.

"Following a thorough three-week recruitment process, the Pilgrims have opted for the Irishman to become the club's new manager as they seek to retain the National League status earned in May.

"He assumes immediate control of first team affairs at the Jakemans Community Stadium, as preparations continue for the visit of Braintree Town on Saturday.”

His first match is on Saturday against Braintree Town where he could face former loan striker John Akinde, though their paths did not cross at the Memorial Stadium. Last week, Josh Grant who was signed during Ben Garner's tenure joined Wealdstone, who are in a relegation battle with Boston.

Coughlan was manager of Rovers from December 2018 to December 2019, having originally joined as defensive coach to Darrell Clarke. He managed 56 games in total with a record of 25 wins, 18 draws and 13 defeats. His departure came at a surprising time having beaten Ipswich Town, leaving them fourth in League One.

The reason for his departure was that Mansfield Town wanted to aquire his services, and he later took the job there. He less than a year, and later became an under-23s coach at Sheffield United. In October 2022, Coughlan took on the Newport County job, and guided them to 15th and 18th-placed finishes,

During a playing career that spanned 19-years, Coughlan mainly played for Plymouth Argyle, spending four years as a player at Home Park. His other clubs were Livingston, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town, Burnley and Southend United.
