Former Bristol Rovers head coach Ben Garner has been sacked by Charlton Athletic. The Addicks have decided to cut ties with the 42-year-old after their poor start to the League One season.

The Gas take on the London club on Saturday 17th December and their opponents may well have a new boss in the helm for that day. They have a big decision to make on what direction they want to take now.

Garner was appointed Bristol Rovers’ manager back in 2019 and took over from Graham Coughlan at the Memorial Ground. He lasted just under 12 months with the Pirates after winning just 18% of games.

The former Crystal Palace, West Brom and ATK coach took over at The Valley over the summer after guiding Swindon Town to the League Two play-offs last season and was chosen as the man to replace Johnnie Jackson. However, he has won just five out of his opening 20 league matches and Charlton sit 17th in the league table.

Marc Birchman has emerged as the bookies favourite for the Charlton job (as of 11:00, 06.12.22). Other names such as former Bristol City boss Dean Holden, Kenny Jackett, Steve Cotterill, Lee Bowyer, David Artell, Leam Richardson, Darren Ferguson and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink are also on the list.

The Addicks return to the action tomorrow night and have an FA Cup replay away at Stockport County after drawing 2-2 with the League Two club. A home clash against Walsall awaits the winner at Edgeley Park in the Third Round.
