Bristol Rovers have made Fleetwood Town captain Jordan Rossiter their first signing of the summer transfer window after getting the cheque book out.

Rossiter has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Gas and joins from their League One rivals and joins for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has twice worked with manager Joey Barton, first as a teammate at Rangers, as well as working under him during their time together at Fleetwood.

Rossiter was formerly of the Liverpool academy and was once tipped by Reds legend Robbie Fowler to be the next Steven Gerrard.

Commenting on his move to the Memorial Stadium, he said: “I’m buzzing to be here. I know a few of the lads already and the whole club is looking to kick on from last season’s brilliant promotion.”

Rossiter had only been linked with a move to the West Country last week and talks progressed quickly enough for a deal to be finalised and for the player to make the move down South for the first time in his career.

At Fleetwood, he was their captain under former manager Simon Grayson. He made ten league appearances for Fleetwood last season but an injury had him sidelined for six months and he has not played a competitive match since October.

It was the second serious injury in a number of years at Highbury Stadium after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 2019/20 season.

Rovers were in the market for a new central midfielder following the departure of Glenn Whelan, whilst Paul Coutts is suspended for the first three games of the season. They had been interested in signing Matt Butcher after his departure from Accrington Stanley but he has joined Plymouth Argyle instead.

Rossiter’s move to Rovers will see him reunite with midfield partner Sam Finley, Harvey Saunders and Coutts, having played with them at Fleetwood.

First-team manager Joey Barton added: “We are delighted to welcome Jordan to Bristol Rovers. A player who I know very well, Jordan is a leader both on and off the pitch.

“His dynamic and combative style, combined with his excellent football ability, will strengthen us in our midfield area. “I’m looking forward to working with Jordan again; he will be a superb addition to our group.”
