Bristol Rovers have the chance to sign more players before the end of the month

Bristol Rovers are set to sign Romaine Sawyers following his exit from AFC Wimbledon, according to the South London Press. The Gas are poised to bring the player to the Memorial Ground on a free transfer.

Sawyers, who is 33-years-old, has made 449 appearances in his career to date and has scored 35 goals. He was playing in the Premier League as recently as 2021 with West Brom.

If Bristol Rovers get the deal over the line, he will give them more competition and depth in midfield. He would also inject some valuable experience into their ranks as they look to stay up in League One.

Bristol Rovers to sign Romaine Sawyers

Wimbledon snapped up Sawyers on a short-term basis in December. He went on to play five matches for the League Two side and chipped in with a single goal.

After linking up with the fourth tier outfit earlier this winter, he said: “It’s a good fit for me – a young manager and squad that is trying to push in the right direction. Wimbledon narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, we have some injuries right now but I feel there’s the talent required to go one better.

“For me personally, it feels good to get back into a position to start playing again after a few months without a club. My aim is to come in and utilise my experience to help the boys get some results over the busy Christmas period.

“I’ve played at this level and at the three above it, I like to think it’s natural for me to help others and offer advice having been captain at clubs in the past. I’ll be aiming to offer that in training and on matchdays.”

Following his departure, the Dons released a statement on their website that read: “The Club can confirm that Romaine Sawyers has departed to pursue a new challenge. This follows negotiations between the midfielder and the Dons following the expiry of Romaine’s previous one-month contract.

“Romaine made five appearances during his time at Wimbledon, scoring in his final game in our recent 2-1 win over Newport County. Everyone at the Club thanks Romaine for his efforts during his time at Cherry Red Records Stadium and wishes him all the best for the future.”

Sawyers is a Saint Kitts and Nevis international with 49 caps under his belt. He started his career at West Brom and rose up through their academy ranks before loan spells away at Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Walsall.

He joined the latter permanently in 2013 and went on to have permanent stints at Brentford, West Brom and Cardiff City. The Baggies signed him for £3million when they lured him back to the Midlands.

A new challenge at Bristol Rovers awaits the Birmingham-born man. The Gas won 1-0 away at Cambridge United last time out as they bounced back from their loss to Leyton Orient in style. Winger Luke Thomas scored their winner against the U’s as they secured three points.
