What is Bristol City’s penalty record? How many spot-kicks Robins have scored from

Bristol City’s 469 day wait for a penalty came to an end in their 1-1 draw against Sunderland at the Stadiu of Light last Saturday.

The Robins’ 10-game unbeaten run was in doubt as the game entered stoppage time but Jay Dasilva was tackled by Alex Hume in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Mark Sykes stepped forward and picked up the ball, but that was a ploy to distract goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. Nahki Wells took the ball and struck a low penalty to earn a valuable point for Nigel Pearson’s side.

Much has changed since the last penalty that City were awarded, with goal scorer Chris Martin on target against Coventry in November 2021. He has since moved on and joined QPR, so there was a decision to be had on who would take the spot kick.

Wells in fact was taking just the third penalty of his City career at the Stadium of Light and before then had a 50% record. He scored his first against Swansea City in October 2020, beating Freddie Woodman, but a week later had one saved by Tim Krul.

Out of the last ten penalty scorers at the club, which ranges from October 2018 to February 2023, only one player remains and that is Wells. Famara Diedhiou, Matty Taylor and Benik Afobe are the other only others to have been able to have had a chance from the spot with only ten penalties awarded from the 2018/29 season onwards.
