Bristol City were denied promotion to the Premier League by one of their current Championship rivals

Bristol City reached the Championship play-off final back in 2008. The Robins were managed by Gary Johnson and had only won promotion from League One the season before.

They took on Hull City at Wembley and ended up losing 1-0 to the Tigers. Dean Windass scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute to fire his hometown club into the Premier League for the first time in their history. The East Yorkshire outfit have since gone on to play in Europe and get to an FA Cup final.

As for Bristol City, they subsequently slipped back into the third tier but got back up under Lee Johnson. Nigel Pearson is the man in charge these days and he has been with the Ashton Gate club since February 2021.
