Bristol City midfielder Han-Noah Massengo has been likened to Dutch superstar Edgar Davids by former Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille and West Ham United midfielder Eduoard Cisse.

Massengo is out on loan at Auxerre until the end of the season, and has been involved heavily for the French outfit since his move near the end of the January transfer window. The 22-year-old has played in all five matches he has been available, and is already closing in on the amount of pitch time he had this season for City.

In his latest match for Auxerre, he played a vital role in securing a shock result, as relegation threatened Auxerre beat Marseille on Friday night. Former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele opened the scoring but Massengo set the tone for the weekend for City, as his quick-feet saw him earn a penalty, like City did this weekend after more than 400 days. Gaetan perrin stepped up and scored the penalty before Brazilian defender Jubal scored the winner.

Massengo could be seen in a highlights reel posted on social media, where he continuously pressed the midfielder and attackers, and was a contender for the player-of-the-match. His performance did not go amiss as in a recap of the weekend of football in France, Eduoard Cisse, along with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who gave Massengo his first start in football for Monaco, praised him.

"I saw him on Friday," Cisse began, whilst appearing as a pundit for Amazon Prime's Ligue One coverage. He was impressive, eye-catching and he made a lot of good tackles.

"He is tough. In duels, he strikes, he is not afraid to show himself in midfield. He reminds me of Edgar Davids."

The comparisson to Davids is an ultimate honour given how he was one of the most recognisable players of his generation and how highly rated he was by his peers. Davids played for Ajax, Juventus, Milan, as well as Inter and Tottenham Hotspur. The 49-year-old was once player-manager at Barnet, and is now assistant manager of the Dutch national team.

Massengo earned a 7.6 player rating with Fotmob, and was 84% accurate with his passes, successfully finding a teammate with 26 out of the 31 passes he attempted. He took 46 touches of the ball and had a 100% dribble success rate, whilst successfully finding a teammate twice out of the four long balls he attempted. In defence, he won half of his tackles, made two interceptions and eight recoveries.

Auxerre remain in the drop zone, but are now only two points adrift of safety and have Lorient, who are chasing a European spot in their next match.

Massengo is with Auxerre in the final few months of his four-year contract with the Robins, and is unlikely to make a return to Ashton Gate. He was offered a new contract in January 2022 but talks remained at a stalemate, and Nigel Pearson and the club opted to prioritise players who have longer contracts with the club.
