Nigel Pearson admitted that his Bristol City midfielders don't score enough goals, and it could be an area of the pitch they could look to recruit in.

A new centre-back remains the the priority this summer, with Tomas Kalas' deal set to expire though there is an offer on the table. If Kalas signs, he will still have one of only two centre-backs available given Rob Atkinson is to spend a considerable amount of time on the sideline.

A few weeks ago, the 59-year-old revealed his desire for his midfielders to chip in with more goals, and with central midfielder Joe Williams finishing with two goals, there is a need for the goals to be shared more around the team. The Robins are a counter-attacking team and so the midfielders are having to play catch-up when the strikers and wingers are already in the box, but for a side that didn't score many goals from outside the box last year, that could all change.

League One club Wycombe Wanders recently published their retained list, and have announced that midfielder Lewis Wing will not be remaining at Adams Park. Wing's contract expired with the Chairboys, but has told the Buckinghamshire club he wants to pursue new opportunities.

“I think everyone understands he's got aspirations to play at a higher level,” said Wycombe manager Matt Bloomfield when reflecting on his departure.

“He feels he can do that and that’s understandable, I think he has had a great season. One of the risks of him coming out of contract was that he would have those aspirations which is fine. I think the world of Wingy, he’s a very good player and he’s got real big quality about him.

Glowing praise from his manager, who will have been gutted to have lost him. Bloomfield’s decision to leave perhaps hints that he believes he can play in the Championship, so could Ashton Gate be an option? He’s coming off one of his best seasons, and there are some factors that could make a move possible.

City will have known about Wing given they played in the Carabao Cup, with the midfielder coming off of the bench in the 3-1 defeat. He’s also a former teammate of Anis Mehmeti, who is still adapting to life in the West Country after making the move. Phil Alexander is another person who could be key to bringing him in should they decide to pursue him. He’s now the CEO at Bristol City, and held the role of Senior Advisor to the Chairman and CEO at Wycombe, so he’ll have easily crossed paths with Wing at some point.

He's an attractive proposition for Nigel Pearson because over the course of the 46-game campaign, he missed just one match and played in 44 games with nine goals and five assists. A return of 14 goal contributions is good for a side that finished outside of the play-offs, and he can play as both a defensive midfielder as well as a central midfielder.

Championship experience is what is needed at City too, and Wing has that with 100 appearances exactly in the second tier. He's also made 75 appearances in League One, as well as 22 in League Two so he’s ready to make the step up.
