The English pyramid system is quite something when it comes to support. You'll struggle to find a country that can boast four professional divisions that has exceptional levels of away support.
Fans travel the length and breadth of the country to support their team, with local derbies games fans look out for, whilst there are also some long gruelling journeys which can be softened by an away win. When it comes to Bristol City, they were 17th for wins on their travels this year, picking up six wins, whilst drawing seven times and losing 10 matches.
Home fans will usually ridicule fans with a small following with ‘Is that all you take away’ but anyone who makes the extra effort to travel to support their team deserves to be applauded. Luckily, we’ve been able to source all the away followings over the course of the 2022/23 season and now fans can use it when they’re trying to banter another fan base.
It has to be said though, some teams have to travel considerable distances because of their geographical location, and there are other factors when it comes to their average. Some home clubs will allow for massive followings if their stadiums allow for it, whilst usually local derbies mean a reduced number of tickets because of the need for segregation, as well as policing.
Here we take a look at how the Championship table would look if based on average away attendances. All information comes from Football League website The 72, who have done it for all three divisions.
