Here are five things we learned from the opening weekend of the Championship....

Bristol City debutants impress

Despite the disappointing defeat in the end, there were positives to take for Bristol City from their game against the Tigers.

Debutant Mark Sykes, who joined the club over the summer from Oxford United in League One, put in an impressive performance, especially in the first-half.

The Northern Ireland international could prove to be a shrewd addition for the Robins, as could Kal Naismith and Kane Wilson, who also showed glimpses of what they are all about in East Yorkshire on Saturday.

Swansea City rue missed chances

This is a big season for Swansea City and Russell Martin and they will fancy their chances of making the top six.

The Swans play an attractive, possession-based style of play and begun the new campaign with a 1-1 draw away at Rotherham United.

They were left to rue missed chances though, with Michael Obafemi missing a sitter in the second-half in front of the away end.

Jamie Paterson then went close to a winner shortly afterwards but the Welsh outfit had to settle for a draw in the end.

Goal machine Cresswell

Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell scored twice on his debut for Millwall and that looks like a very astute signing for the Lions already.

The Lions won 2-0 at home to Stoke City with a brace from the young defender.

Cresswell, 19, is on a season-long loan with Gary Rowett’s side and looks to be a real threat from set pieces.

Decent point for Birmingham

It has been a turbulent summer for Birmingham with the takeover situation and change of manager from Lee Bowyer to John Eustace.

A trip to Luton Town on the first day of the campaign was seen as a tough one for the Blues after the Hatters made the play-offs last term.

However, the visitors held firm and travelled back home with a point after a dogged defensive display.

Arsenal loanee Auston Trusy, who has spent his whole career to date playing in America, put in an impressive performance on his debut and is one to watch.

Kompany catches eye

The spotlight was on Vincent Kompany on his return to English football and he began his tenure as Burnley boss with an impressive win over last season’s play-off runners-up Huddersfield Town.

The Clarets looked sharp and their new additions like Josh Cullen, Scott Twine and Taylor Harwood-Bellis all looked strong. Still early days of course but that win may have swept away any concerns of a hangover from last season’s relegation.
