Nigel Pearson has praised Tommy Conway after the Bristol City striker was called up to represent Scotland Under-21’s.

The 20-year-old has been rewarded for his fine form with a first international call-up, where he will represent a country he qualifies for through a grandparent.

Conway has six goals and two assists in ten matches this season, making him the top scorer so far in what has been a positive start to the campaign.

The academy graduate who signed a new three-year deal this summer has grabbed at the chance provided to him by Nigel Pearson.

He had been given opportunities off the bench but after scoring a brace against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup, Conway has started regularly and repaid the faith put in him.

Conway is due to play two more games; Norwich City and Burnley away, before he links up with the Scots, with the striker reminded of the task in hand.

Wishing him well, Pearson said: “Good luck to him. He will be reminded by his teammates in particular and by us as staff to very much keep himself focused on the job in hand.

“It is great for Tommy, he’s had a really good I suppose introduction to life in the Championship this year.

“He made his debut against Millwall the year before but he’s done well and hopefully that continues.”

As Conway prepares for his international berth, he will join a number of players who have represented their country either at senior or age-group level.

Antoine Semenyo has been called up by Ghana for what could be his second and third appearance as he tries to force his way into the World Cup squad.

Austria international Andi Weimann has continued his fine form and will be pushing to be a part of the Nations League fixtures.

One player that won’t be linking up for international duty is club record signing Tomas Kalas, who remains sidelined by injury.

Kalas has not played a game this season and will remain out until October or November, leaving City with less defensive options to choose from.

The 29-year-old had initially gone for surgery on his groin in April of last year, due to playing a consistent run of games with minimal break after the delayed EURO 2020.

Kalas now has a different injury to contend with and his manager was able to provide an update on where he is for a return.

Clarifying the situation, Pearson said: “It’s a knee injury. He has had a procedure which is difficult one to access.

“It’s a part of the knee which is at the back that is hard to access the amount of tissue and the layers of it to get to. It’s quite an unusual injury but he is doing really well.”
