Nigel Pearson explains Andi Weimann’s Plymouth absence amid Leicester City test

Nigel Pearson says Bristol City captain Andi Weimann was rested for Tuesday night’s clash against Plymouth Argyle with plans that he will be involved against Leicester City on Saturday.

Weimann has had a frustrating start to the campaign, with a foot issue that has seen him play just 26 minutes so far in all competitions.

The captain was again left out of City’s squad for their match against the Pilgrims in midweek, and Pearson insisted that the Austrian is lined up to feature at Leicester this weekend.

“He would prefer to be in the squad, but just looking at the history of this injury, I think it’s probably prudent to get that little bit of extra training in for the weekend,” he said to the BBC pre-Plymouth.

The Foxes have won five of their six league games this season, and will no doubt pose a big test for the Robins. Pearson spent a total of six years at Leicester over two spells and is well-respected among Foxes fans for building the foundations that allowed the club to famously win the Premier League seven years ago.

The manager continued: “We will come up against a very good and accomplished side in Leicester City, so it’s important that we have extra options. I think that’s more appropriate for him to be available for that game.”

Weimann’s return will provide additional options for the manager, with the ex-Aston Villa man capable of operating as part of a midfield three, on the right wing or potentially through the middle up front.
