'Conviction' - Liam Manning's honest view after Bristol City earn FA Cup replay vs West Ham

West Ham 1-1 Bristol City

Liam Manning praised Bristol City's bravery as they earned an FA Cup third-round replay in their 1-1 draw at West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen sent the hosts in front inside five minutes with a neat finish, before Tommy Conway struck for the Robins in the second period.

City struggled to cope with the early pace of the tie, but their manager was impressed with the calmness his side displayed.

"Going behind so early, sometimes you can fold a little bit when you’re up against a level of opposition like they are, in front of 60,000 fans and away from home," he said. "You can easily go under, but we showed a great togetherness to respond.

"We spoke at half-time about taking more risks and being brave up top, and we did that in the second half, we showed bravery to play and had conviction at the end of it which was the big part for me, we haven’t had that in the last couple of games."

Despite West Ham's positive start, the Robins crafted several good opportunities and went close through Cam Pring before Conway's strike.

City had the hosts pinned in at the start of the second period, and Manning insisted that is how he wants his side to play every week.

He added: "The first 20 minutes of the second half is exactly how we want to play, really good control, good press out of possession, and in possession, a good purpose to our play. We got into some really good positions and showed our conviction high up the pitch."

Before the match, City had failed to score in back-to-back games, but their young forward Conway popped up with a vital goal when they needed it most against the Hammers.

The Scot has now netted four goals in his last eight matches in all competitions after a tough spell in front of goal.

"He's had to be patient and work hard, I spoke to him before that game that part of a striker's job is missing chances," Manning said.

"When I first came in he missed a couple of similar chances so I know Hoggy has done a terrific job with Tommy, he's keen to learn and do extra work."
