Nigel Pearson applauded the team effort of his Bristol City side in their 2-1 victory over Rotherham United at Ashton Gate.

City went ahead through Tommy Conway in the first half, before a controversial Jordan Hugill penalty levelled the game midway through the second half.

The game looked destined to end as a draw, but a last-minute winner from substitute Andi Weimann secured all three points in dramatic fashion.

“It’s a good win for us, a tough game, they're fighting for their lives and for a team like us who are really playing for our own standards then it’s a good win,” he said. “We played ok, they played slightly differently to what we expected, they weren’t quite as direct, but we kept going until the end.”

The result takes City up to 56 points with two games to play, which tops last season's total tally of 55 points, and the manager recognized the importance of the achievement.

“It’s a good squad effort today, it’s a good win for us. It takes us above last year’s total which is important for us and we can look forward to the next two games now and hopefully push on again,” he added.

“It's nice to have some sort of progression. It’s felt like a difficult season in some ways, we've had some difficult spells. But I think at last we are starting to get a real identity which is founded on energy, pace and players who are hungry for success, so that’s good for us.”

The Robins remain in 14th place after the victory, and will face Championship runaway leaders Burnley at Ashton Gate next weekend.
