Bristol City could see a large crowd for their first home game of the 2022/23 Championship season against Sunderland.

The Robins began their league campaign with a late 2-1 defeat to Hull City on Saturday with Andi Weimann on target before the Tigers claimed two late goals.

Hoping to put things right, they are in action in front of the home faithful at Ashton Gate, taking on the Black Cats who drew 1-1 with Coventry City in front of 40,000 fans.

The club have introduced ‘mates rates’ offers which will allow season ticket holders to bring two friends for £12.50 in any area of the stadium, whilst members can claim a £15 ticket in the South Stand, Family Area and the Dolman Wings.

Supporters have taken up the offer in their droves with the latest figure from the club being that 23,000 tickets have been sold.

It is considerably higher than the season opener last season which has a crowd of 18,729 against Blackpool. With tickets continuing to sell, it could become the highest attended home match since the return of spectators.

City were ranked eighth last year in the home attendance figures with an average of 19,183, ranking them higher than Severnside rivals Cardiff City.

The match with the League One play-off winners falls on the annual Flag Day, an event to usher in a new campaign. Supporters are encouraged to don the home colours of City to make for a sea of red and white whilst bringing flags that will make for a greater atmosphere, as well as making for a scenic picture.

Stoney Garnett, a legendary supporter of the club, recently passed away and a tribute has been planned to remember the popular figure.

As well as the efforts of the home fans, the opposition Sunderland could bring a sizeable away following to Bristol City after receiving a large allocation.
