The 32-year-old has seven league goal contributions this season with five goals and two assists, with his most recent coming with a goal against his former club Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Football metrics website WhoScored, who are partnered with the English Football League to decide their weekly, monthly and annual awards, have analysed City’s team and provided some interesting results.

Wells’ performances have seen him earn a rating of 7.36 with two man-of-the-match performances against Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers to boast.

He has formed a formidable strike partnership with academy graduate Tommy Conway recently and was praised by former Robins midfielder Josh Brownhill in the aftermath of the defeat in Lancashire over the weekend.

Wells’ best challengers for best-rated player are Andi Weimann and Kal Naismith, who are neck-and-neck for runner-up. Weimann has the edge with his four assists and three goals, giving him a rating of 7.04, though he hasn’t been awarded the Player of the Match award yet.

Summer signing Naismith meanwhile has had an indifferent start to the season with some solid displays whilst on other occasions, he was part of a team that shipped a number of goals. The 30-year-old was given the Man of the Match award after keeping a clean sheet against Cardiff City, recording an impressive 8.09 match rating.

At the other end of the table, Wilson is statistically City’s lowest-performing player, though he hasn’t been afforded much game time this season. The former Forest Green Rovers defender joined to seemingly fill the right wing-back role but Mark Sykes has been preferred ahead of him with the ex-West Brom man having to settle for substitute appearances, whilst he was not included on the bench in their last two matches. He has been given a 6.02 rating by WhoScored, which is 0.4 lower than nearest-placed Andy King.
