In-form Bristol City striker Tommy Conway is reportedly in line for a fast track to the Scotland national senior team, for their upcoming matches.

The 20-year-old was called up to the Under-21 team earlier this month and looked set to face Northern Ireland in a double-header of friendly matches in Belfast and Paisley.

Conway could now find himself turning out for Steve Clarke’s men in their UEFA Nations League triple-header with two fixtures against Ukraine and one with Ireland.

Scotland face Ukraine at Hampden Park on Wednesday, September 21, before hosting Ireland three days later on Saturday, September 24. They round off their campaign with a match against Ukraine on Tuesday, September 27 which will be played in Poland amid the conflict with Russia.

Conway has a fine start to the season, scoring seven goals and earning three assists in the 12 matches he’s played in the Championship and Carabao Cup this season.

He provided an assist for his strike partner for Nahki Wells in the Robins’ 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, before heading out for international duty.

A space has opened up after Stoke City striker Jacob Brown withdrew along with Grant Hanley and goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin for the last international break before the World Cup.

Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who extensively covers the English Football League, posted on his Patreon account that Conway is set for a ‘Scotland promotion shock’.

Conway qualifies for the Scots through his grandfather, with the striker admitting it was a proud moment for him and his family when he received news of a call-up.

He would be in competition with Southampton’s Che Adams and Queens Park Rangers forward Lyndon Dykes for a starting berth, though managers at international football are afforded five substitutions during every match.

An appearance for Scotland would go a way to tying Conway to Scotland permanently, which would mean he wouldn’t be able to turn out for the England national team in the future.

FIFA’s eligibility rules changed in September 2020 but there would have to be an exceptional run of events for him to turn out for the Three Lions, should he play for Scotland.

He would have to not play more than three competitive games (which are Nations League matches) before the age of 21, he is 20 years old. Conway would also would have to wait three years to represent England if he did play a part for Scotland’s seniors this month.

The Bristol-born striker does reserve the right to reject any call-up and remain in the Under-21’s with any appearances at an age-grade level not counted.

Andi Weimann, Alex Scott and Antoine Semenyo are the other senior players on international duty for Austria, England Under-20’s and Ghana respectively.
