Bristol City are hopeful of signing Burnley defender Luke McNally before the deadline but Harry Darling won’t be joining.

According to the Bristol Post, there is a growing confidence at Ashton Gate that they can land McNally. If they can sign him before Friday’s deadline of 11.00 pm then he would be their final signing of the summer transfer window.

A move to the West Country was first spoken about at the start of the month when the Clarets were interested in Tommy Conway and both McNally and Scott Twine were considered for transfer. Twine ended up rejoining City, and now his former Burnley teammate could end up following him.

The 24-year-old played the entirety of Burnley’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. He has also made appearances off the bench against Luton Town and Sunderland in the Championship this term.

Since joining them two years ago, McNally has made seven appearances. He spent the entirety of last season on loan at Stoke City. McNally also had a six-month loan spell at Coventry City so he is well-versed with Championship football.

News of City’s confidence in signing McNally comes after an approach for Harry Darling was rejected by Swansea City. Football Insider reported on Wednesday evening that the Robins had made an approach but that was quickly turned down.

Darling's contract with the Welsh club expires in the summer and he has previously worked with manager Liam Manning at MK Dons. The 25-year-old remains a key part of the Swans defence, and so he will remain in South Wales for at least the next few months.

A centre-back remains a priority for City after Rob Dickie suffered a hamstring injury against Coventry City. In his pre-match press conference, Manning revealed to the Bristol Post that Dickie would need to undergo further tests to assess the damage done to his hamstring after coming off against the Sky Blues in the 52nd minute.
