Anis Mehmeti and summer signing Sinclair Armstrong put the Robins ahead but Romaine Esse and Tom Bradshaw netted in a three-minute salvo for the men from South London, and then Duncan Warmore put Neil Harris' side ahead. Fally Mayulu continued his positive start in the red and white of Bristol City as he got the hosts back on level terms before Scott Twine marked his return with an 88th minute winner.
The first home game of the season tends to be a match where it's a big crowd, as it's August when the kids aren't in school, it's a weekend, and parents are looking for something to do. Some supporters may miss the match as they're on their summer holidays, but others are desperate to be there.
Against Millwall, Bristol City recorded an attendance of 20,733, which is 2,580 down from the 23,313 who attended the 1-1 draw with Preston North End on the opening home game of last season. Out of the 20,733 that attended, 1,177 of those were travelling supporters.
City kicked off at the more traditional time of 3.00 pm on a Saturday, whereas the opening weekend there were fixtures split across Friday to Monday, with all of them being shown on television. Clubs will continue to study the possible affect the launch of Sky Sports + will have on attendances, but for the time being, things haven’t changed too much
