It’s the last place you expect to find such good food

When you imagine a brewery on an industrial estate you’d be forgiven for thinking up a huge dusty warehouse and a car park filled with lorries plus a small shop selling kegs.

So when visiting the modern Tiny Rebel Brewery Bar - on the Wern Industrial Estate just off the M4 at Newport - you might get a shock. I certainly did when I parked up outside and first saw people sitting out on wooden deck chairs.

Sipping pints of beers of all different colours, they could hardly have been enjoying the view of warehouses and passing lorries, and it was a bit chilly - but this was the opening clue of the party-style vibrancy at this impressive site an hour’s drive from Bristol.

The brewery was opened in 2017 following the rapid expansion of Tiny Rebel, founded just over 10 years ago by brothers-in-law Bradley Cummings and Gareth Williams. The company has gone from strength to strength with its drinks now found in many supermarkets . The fruity Clwb Tropica is the current best-seller.

And it’s this success which reflects in the spend on the brewery’s bar which simply oozes with character. From the lively outside terrace to the wall decorations made from beer cans to the photo booth to the huge shuffleboard game table, there’s so much to look at before evening sitting down.

I was directed with my family to a table by a friendly waitress who provided a double-sided menu full of reasonably-priced street food broken down into categories; ribs, mexican, light bites, loaded fries, burgers, wings and salads.

Then there was the long bar filled with all different types of drinks which really do push the taste boundaries! There’s a Sugar Plum Shake, an Extra Special Bitter and a Very Cherry Stout (you get the idea!).

I went for a chicken burrito served with rice, cheese, pickled red cabbage, guacamole and fries (£9.50). I couldn’t also resist the truffle parmesan fries (£4).

It came out quickly, served on a metal tray with paper-wrapped knife and fork. The burrito was dripping with ‘rich key lime mojo sauce’ and the slow-cooked meat was tender - it was delicious and filling. I didn’t really need the parmasan fries, but they were also quickly eaten.

Being in a brewery and watching workers tend to the huge barrels of beers-in-the-making behind the bar, it wouldn’t have been right not to have a drink. I went for the Clwb Tropica. Yes, I’d tried it before, but coming from the tap and being so fresh it quenched by thirst perfectly, and the fruitness was certainly zingy.

Finishing so quickly, I had the chance to have a quick game on the shuffleboard before paying up and heading outside where a couple of large groups of workers were pulling up to go inside. I looked at my watch and it was only 3pm - but then, with this on their doorstep, you can’t blame them!
