A man accused of starting a fire which destroyed much of an historic boat yard in Bristol has been named by police ahead of a court hearing today (May 8). Underfall Yard on Bristol’s Harbourside was severely damaged by the blaze, which began at 12.05am on Saturday.

The charity which runs the yard, called The Underfall Yard Trust, said the fire had ‘destroyed the heart of the yard where most of the boat building activity takes place’.

Today, Avon and Somerset Police said they had charged Robert Boyd-Stevenson, of Headford Road in Knowle, with arson with intent to endanger life and arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.

The 45-year-old man has also been charged with a stalking offence.

He is due before Bristol Magistrates Court today.
