A driver was caught using a mobile phone every 10 minutes on a busy route out of Bristol at rush hour yesterday (April 27). Avon and Somerset Police carried out the checks on the outbound side of the A4 Bath Road between Brislington and Hicks Gate from around 4pm.

Over 90 minutes, the officers caught 12 motorists on a mobile phone, 15 without a seat belt and one on a mobile phone and without a seat belt.

More than eight police officers could be seen pulling over vehicles - and there was long tail backs to Brislington as a result of the lane closure on the dual carriageway. Motorists caught on their phone can get 6 penalty points and a £200 fine.

The force’s road policing team tweeted last night: “Supporting a #FATAL5 operation with @ASPBristol today on the Bath Rd, Brislington. Engaged with many drivers during the 90 mins we were present, but also issued Traffic Offence Reports (TORs).”

The Fatal Five actions are not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, not paying attention, driving under the influence, and speeding.
