Gareth Bale probably wanted more of lasting impact during Wales’ short and unhappy time at the World Cup in Qatar this winter - but in Bristol, with the superstar’s new crazy golf venue called Par 59, the 33-year-old is much more likely to find success.

The venue, which features two bright and colourful nine-hole mini golf courses, opened in Millennium Promenade in the Harbourside on Thursday. And on Friday, the Bristol World editorial staff arrived, some decked in Christmas jumpers, to give the attraction a try.

Firstly, we needed no reminder that this was a brand new destination with the strong fragrance of paint hitting our cold nostrils as we walked up the steps from the entrance. At the top we handed over our jackets and received a smart team scorecard along with a few pencils for the much-anticipated game.

With our best Rory McIlroy impersonsations, we strolled inside to find a warm and smart dining area with a well-stocked bar featuring Bristol Beer Factory drinks alongside the usual lagers and IPAs. A pint of Moretti and Beavertown Neck Oil cost £11.30.

A few sips down, and it was game time. Of the two nine-hole courses, we were shown to the ‘Fairground’ and each handed a putter along with one ball to share between as we prepared to tee off - and this was sadly where any likening to Rory McIlroy amongst us vanished.

No hole was the same with various themes for each. With some you simply had to avoid barriers and go down a slope to get to the hole. With others you needed to get the ball through a target before even thinking of setting sights on the hole.

It all ended with a climax hole on a raised platform with a chance to win a prize with a hole-in-one. It goes without saying, none of us managed it. But we all finished the round with a smile and a laugh.

This is not the wind-swept, cheap crazy golf courses from childhood seaside holidays . This is a smart venue offering an entertaining half-hour with friends, families or colleagues in the heart of Bristol, with a chance to get a drink or some food at the same time.

The venue also features four interactive darts boards which appeared just as popular as the golf on the night we were there.

Yes, Bristol already has several crazy golf venues. But this, with its smart, casual dining and fun atmosphere, feels a step above. The Bristol World team now just needs to improve its game!
