The Met Office is predicting snow will fall in Bristol this weekend as a yellow weather warning for ice and snow hangs over the region until midday tomorrow (December 11). Light snow fall is forecast in the early hours of tomorrow, from 3am to 4am and 5am to 6am. Sleet is expected between 7am and 8am tomorrow morning.

Interestingly, towns around the city like Keynsham, Portishead and Thornbury are not predicted snow, according to the hour-by-hour forecast on the Met Office website, which also warns of disruption due to ‘icy surfaces, with snowfall in a few places’.

Temperatures which have risen to 4C this morning will fall to freezing again tonight before rising to 2C tomorrow lunchtime.

The yellow weather warning for snow and ice covers much of the west of the UK including Wales. The Met Office says people should expect icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. And it urges people to be careful due to a risk of slips and falls.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, said: “It is staying cold with daytime temperatures remaining only a few degrees above freezing in many places over the coming days and overnight temperatures dropping to -10°C or lower in isolated spots. Although below average, these temperatures are not that unusual for this time of year.

“There is still a risk we could see some freezing fog in places particularly southern England, especially for Sunday and Monday mornings.”

A Level 3 Cold Weather Alert has also been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) covering all of England and is currently in place until Friday (December 16). The alert is put in place when severe cold weather is likely to significantly affect people’s health.
