The Lamb also has a dartboard and pool table for the locals

‘Warning: No stupid people beyond this point’. As welcome signs go, the one by the door of The Lamb takes some beating.

It’s followed by one that reads: ‘Welcome to the madhouse’, close to a poster advertising ‘Sizzlin’ Dave’s karaoke’.

In the heart of Cadbury Heath - known locally as ‘Banjo Island’ due to its banjo shape from the air - The Lamb is quite unusual as part of the original pub was converted into a Co-Op supermarket a few years ago.

At the time, it was saved by a campaign to prevent a change of use and the owner turned part of the large pub into the convenience store, which now shares a car park with The Lamb.

However, earlier this year, the entire property was put on the market with an auction guide price of £750,000  so what happens to the pub in future is unknown but it was business as usual when I visited this week.

A large pub with an outdoor area at the front, it overlooks a small green, with a row of shops around the corner.

In an area not blessed with too many pubs, The Lamb is very much the meeting place for many locals and there’s a dartboard and pool table.

Prices at the bar are lower than many pubs. My pint of Estrella was £4.20 - I’ve paid £6 for the same drink in the city centre.

Also on tap are Natch, Dry Blackthorn, Thatchers Haze, Thatchers Gold, Stella Artois, Cruzcampo, Foster’s, Budweiser and Carling.

If shots are your thing, you can enjoy two Baby Guinness cocktails for £5, the same price as three Sambuca Sourz.

The pub also hosts occasional live music. The next big event is a gig from the amusingly named local Oasis tribute band Cidernova on April 27.

‘We’ll be playing back at our spiritual home at The Lamb, Banjo Island,’ is the message from Cidernova on the band’s Facebook page. ‘Should be another biblical night in Cadbury Heath!’ Not surprisingly, tickets are already selling fast.

The Lamb, Newton Road, Cadbury Heath, BS30 8EP.
