It’s that time of year again when hundreds of children across the Bristol region are tested on what they’ve learned in the school classroom with GCSE exams now taking place.
The results not only impact the students, many of whom will have ambitions to go on to higher education, but it also has implications on the schools with the results made public each year.
Families may then use these results to help them make a decision on which school to send children in primary school to next.
Using the Sunday Times’ Parent Power Guide for 2023, we have compiled a list of the best performing secondary schools in the Bristol region, based on GCSE results.
Schools are ranked by performance at GCSE in summer 2022. The number of 9, 8, 7, A* and A grades gained at GCSE is expressed as a percentage of the total number of GCSE entries overall. We have taken out independent schools.

5. Wellsway School
Wellsway School has 1,311 pupils with 30.5% achieving level 7 - 9 which is equivalent to an A or A* grade.

6. The Castle School, Thornbury
The Castle School has 1,524 pupils with 36.4% achieving level 7 - 9 which is equivalent to an A or A* grade.

7. Katharine Lady Berkeley School
Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School has 1,500 pupils with 37% achieving level 7 - 9 which is equivalent to an A or A* grade.

8. St Bede’s Catholic College
St Bede’s Catholic College has 1,275 pupils with 37.6% achieving level 7 - 9 which is equivalent to an A or A* grade.
