Here at Bristol World we like to look at the positives of the city and celebrate all things Bristol, especially the people who have made it great.
From Hollywood legend Cary Grant through to artist Damien Hirst, Bristol has produced countless stars over the years and had many notable residents who have contributed to the rich fabric of the city.
And if you include the areas around the city, any list of great Bristolians could also include author JK Rowling (Yate), England cricketer Marcus Trescothick (Keynsham) and John Cleese (born in Weston-super-Mare but educated at Clifton College).
Add to the pot, all the famous names who went to school in Bristol, studied at the universities or relocated to the city, and it’s fair to say, we have plenty to people who make us want to love Bristol even more than we do already.
So here are ten of those people who have helped put Bristol on the map, whether it’s through music, sport or acting, and make us proud to call them our own.

1. Russell Howard
Although he was actually born in Bath, comedian Russell Howard studied economics at UWE in Bristol and makes a welcome return to the city when he performs at the Hippodrome in April
2. Stephen Merchant
Originally from Hanham, comedian, actor and director Stephen Merchant made his name with The Office and returned to his home city to film acclaimed series The Outlaws
3. Peter Lord
Animator Peter Lord was born in Bristol, which is where he co-founded Aardman Animations, home of Morph, Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit
4. Massive Attack
Bristol musicians Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall and Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja appeared on the city’s music scene in the 1980s as part of the Wild Bunch and have become global stars as the pioneering band Massive Attack
