It’s Friday (June 16), and Bristol is basking in the sun as temperatures are set to rise to 28C later today - even matching the warmth in sunny resorts abroad like Malaga.
Along with pictures of people sat in the sun, we also went to see the nightclub being demolished and spoke to union members taking part in strike action outside the Bristol Royal Infirmary and University of Bristol.
But enjoy the weather while it lasts. Heavy and thundrery showers are expected this weekend with temperatures also falling to around 23C.
For now, enjoy these eight pictures today:
1. University staff protest
It’s a busy day at the University of Bristol campuses with an open day bringing in hundreds of visitors. Outside many of the entrances like here at Wills Memorial Building, UCU members take part in strike action in a pay dispute with the university. They stand outside handing out leaflets and blowing whistles.
2. Doctors’ strike
Junior doctors stand at the picket line outside Bristol Royal Infirmary as they take part in a three-day strike over pay. The group held up their banners as motorists sounded horns as they went by.
3. ‘Earth is flat'
Boardings cover the demolished site of the old WH Smiths building in Clifton Village. The site was most recently used to house a temporary ice rink - but is today empty. There have been plans to build a block of shops - but little progress has been made on the idea
4. Blue Mountain no more
Work is taking place to bring down the former Blue Mountain nightclub which closed in September 2020. On the site will next be a mixed-use site including student beds, office space and commercial units.
