Southmead Hospital: Police issue update on man arrested in major incident - as the public thank hospital and emergency services

Avon and Somerset Police have given an update on the security alert which led to the closure of Southmead Hospital’s A&E yesterday (March 10).
The major incident was declared at 11.30am after a man claimed to be in possession of explosives while in the emergency department.

Hide AdPatients were evacuated and a cordon was put in place while the explosive ordnance disposal unit attended. The team examined a number of bags before declaring the area safe, allowing A&E to reopen at around 3pm.
One man, in his 50s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of making a bomb hoax.
The police force has said he has now been detained under the Mental Health Act and is undergoing assessment.
A spokesperson said: “We do not believe this incident to have been terrorism-related and we appreciate the public’s patience and support while this incident was dealt with.”

Hide AdMeanwhile, North Bristol NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, has shared message of thanks it received from people for its work during the incident.
Outpatient appointments were cancelled for more departments for the day as a result of what happened.
One person said: “Very proud of the staff at Southmead Hospital today looking and caring for patients getting them evaluated safely - well done.”
Another said: “None of the pictures do justice to the amazing response of police, fire services and so many hospital staff. The whole area was closed down so quickly, but also so calmly.
“I felt reassured for our loved ones there.”
The hospital trust tweeted: “A huge and heartfelt thank you from all of us at NBT to everyone who supported us.”
