Police confirm man’s death after Stockwood fire - but cause of blaze is unknown

A man, in his 50s, has died following a fire at his home in Stockwood, police have confirmed. Meanwhile, fire investigators have been unable to determine the cause of the blaze at the home in Dutton Road in Stockwood on January 23.

Dozens of people have paid tribute to the man, named locally as Spencer, on social media with many describing him as a ‘lovely man’. Flowers have also placed outside the front door to the man’s home.

On Friday, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the man died three days after the fire, on January 26. A spokesperson said: “Avon Fire and Rescue Service called us at about 3.45pm on Monday 23 January to make us aware of a fire they were dealing with at an address in Dutton Road, Stockwood.

“A man, in his 50s, was rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital, where he sadly died three days later. His family have been informed and our sympathies are with them. We are continuing to conduct enquiries on behalf of the coroner.”

Fire crews from Temple, Bedminster, Kingswood, Avonmouth, Yate and Hicks Gate attended the incident. Firefighters rescued the man who was inside the property and he was taken to hospital by South Western Ambulance Service.

On Friday, a spokesperson said: “A fire investigation conducted on January 24 was unable to determine the cause of the incident due to the extent of the fire.”

Bristol World understands police are not treating the man’s death as suspicious.
