Schools in Bristol are currently enjoying the Christmas holidays - a special time of year which many parents in the city will remember fondly when recounting their time at school.
Bristol World has sieved through Bristol City Council’s Know Your Place website, a tool which allows the community to upload pictures, old and new, of their surroundings with notes to give context to the images. We’ve picked out eight images showing Bristol schools which have either been closed completely or relocated.
This year, the future of some Bristol schools has been shrouded in uncertainty with the city’s only Islamic faith school, Andalusia Academy announcing it was to close on December 15 due to rising costs and St Barnabas Primary coming under risk of permanent closure.
You may have spent time at some of the schools we have selected - we hope these images bring back happy memories
1. Stoke Bishop School
This picture shows the former Stoke Bishop Church School. The building was used as a school from 1841 and would change hands a number of times before it was all but destroyed during the German Blitz bombing raids in December 1940. The school would relocate to its current Cedar Park site in 1951. The site is now used by the 43rd Bristol Scouts group.
2. Pen Park School
As mentioned with Merrywood - the school was closed in 2000. The remaining 58 pupils and teaching staff held a moving memorial on closing day. The site was reopened as Southmead Community Sports Ground in 2012.
3. Merrywood School
Merrywood school closed its doors in 2000 despite protests from parents. It taught children in south Bristol for more than a century before it was shut down - opening in 1896. It was closed alongside Pen Park School at the turn of the millennium as the local authority aimed to cut surplus places.
4. Lockleaze School
This image shows the school in 1958 - it would close in 2004 after more than 50 years of education. The early 2000s featured a radical shake-up of Bristol’s education system and this secondary school was one of many schools to close as a result.
