A new Greggs cafe and bakery has opened in a supermarket in south Bristol.

The new store in the Tesco Extra on Callington Road in Brislington proved popular on its opening day despite the heavy rain and winds from Storm Ciaran.

Married couple Keith and Jackie Attwell, from Knowle, were among the customers on a busy opening day.

“It’s very good value compared to Costa, and we can hardly get in the Greggs at Broadwalk Shopping Centre,” said Keith.

“I’m thrilled it’s here but it could’ve been a bit bigger,” added Jackie.

The Greggs at Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle closed temporarily on Saturday,  but it is not clear when it is reopening.

Greggs in The Galleries Shopping Centre in the city centre is also understood to be closed ‘until further notice’.

Emelie and Derek Kailoh, from Stockwood, were also enjoying a coffee in the new Greggs in Tesco on opening day.

“I think it’s a good idea as a lot of supermarkets you walk around and there’s nothing to eat in-store,” said Derek.

“We used to go to the one at Broadwalk,” added Emelie. “We used to go there as we shopped in that area.”

The closure of Greggs in Broadwalk follows a string of other store closures in the shopping centre, which is due to be knocked down and replaced with 850 homes.

Greggs says its new store in Brislington has a ‘fresh new look, comfortable seating and is open daily from 7am to 7pm’.

Shop manager Michael Jones said: “We can’t wait to welcome both Greggs fans and new customers to our brand-new shop. We’ve got an amazing range of tasty bakes, hot drinks, sweet treats and savouries available for takeaway or Click + Collect.”

Gillian Long, retail operations director for Greggs, added: “Our new shop in Brislington has brought 12 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their favourite Greggs food.”

BristolWorld has contacted Greggs regarding the reopening plans for the Knowle and Galleries stores.
