Ashley Down's Co-op moved into the new, purpose-built store on Gloucester Road on June 28.

“The new Co-op on Gloucester Road, Bristol is oppressively dark, making it an unhealthy working and unpleasant shopping environment,” wrote Anna Rath, whose petition to improve the store has more than 70 signatures since being started last Friday (July 19).
“Concerns have been raised by many customers about the oppressive darkness.
“It is widely noted that poor lighting can significantly impact health, leading to symptoms like eye strain and headaches, increased stress, and lowered mood and energy levels.

Rath added: “We must rectify this situation for the wonderful staff who serve our community.
“We urge the Co-op management to implement measures to increase the amount of natural light in the Gloucester Road shop.
“A healthier, brighter workplace will be advantageous for all - improving staff morale, customer satisfaction, and overall shopping experience.”

“I thought Co-op was better than that but obviously not.”
And Kelly Pitchard said: “This shop is even more dingy than the last.
“Not a pleasant shopping experience when popping in for 5 minutes, let alone spending all day in it!”
A spokesperson for Co-op told BristolWorld: “Co-op is committed to giving our customers a great shopping experience and our new Ashley Down store has had a positive response from the local community since it launched.
“We know there are a few comments about the low level of lighting in the store, and so we are looking into this.”
