M5 Clevedon traffic live: Southbound accident results in miles of queues near Portishead

A crash on the southbound M5 between Bristol and Clevedon has resulted in long queues this lunchtime (December 29). It has happened between Junction 19 for Portishead and Junction 20 for Clevedon at 11.37am.

Google Maps shows stop-start traffic going back several miles to the turn-off for Portbury. Current travel time from J19 to J20 is 80 minutes - meaning there is a delay of more than an hour.

One person on social media said all lanes were blocked and police were at the scene.

National Highways South West issued a statement on the crash. It said: “There are currently delays of 75 minutes above the usual travel time on the M5 southbound between J19 - J20 near Clevedon due to a collision.

“Lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) are closed and emergency services are on scene. Please take care on approach.”

At around 1pm, the body added: “Update - All lanes are now OPEN on the M5 southbound J19 - J20. There are residual delays of 60 minutes above the usual travel time, which should now begin to ease. Thank you.”
