A man has died after falling from a bridge over the M5, and then being struck by a number of vehicles, near Weston-super-Mare.

The incident happened close to Banwell last night (January 18) at 10.35pm.

It led to the northbound closure of the motorway between Junction 22 for Burnham and Junction 21 for Weston - both the motorway and the A371 have since reopened today.

Police and paramedics responded to the incident, but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is at an early stage, but his death is not believed to be suspicious.

Although the formal identification process has yet to be completed, the man’s next of kin has been notified.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

The force is asking any drivers who may have seen what happened, or were driving along the M5 or A371 last night and may have dashcam footage that could assist enquiries, to call 101 and give reference number 5222014303.
