A lost dog was reunited with her owner thanks to a quick-thinking photographer who spotted the pet stuck on the bank to the River Avon under the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Karol Miksza, one third of Boys in Bristol Photography, alerted emergency services when he saw the dog, named Pheobe, scrambling around on the small piece of grass next to the Portway.

Being on the other side of the river, he then went around Cumberland Basin before catching up with Avon and Fire Rescue crews from Temple and Bedminster who arrived at the scene, on Sunday at 6.50pm

Using ladders, lighting annd water rescue safety equipment, the crews climbed down the Portway wall to rescue the dog. Fortunately, the dog’s owner was in the area having been alerted to a dead fox found nearby.

Mr Miksza, who posted the story on his Instagram profile BoysinBristol, said: “We had just been walking by Leigh Woods when we saw the animal on the river bank, it was amazing really and I’m so glad Pheobe has been reunited with its owner.

“The bank was dangerous and the dog could have been in danger if there longer.”

Mr Miksza said the relieved dog owner had lost their pet when it became startled while walking along the Portway.
