A body found in Avon Gorge has been formally identified as missing man Joseph Day, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed.
Mr Day went missing from his home in Pembroke Road in Clifton on Saturday, April 30. The alarm was raised for the 31-year-old by his fiancee after she failed to get in contact while she was away in London.
A major appeal was launched before police discovered a man’s body in Avon Gorge.
This morning (May 11), a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said the body had been formally identified as being Mr Day, adding that officers will continue to carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.
Mr Day was a former television camera operator who had moved to Bristol with his partner Kelsey Mulcahy in January. He had been working for city-based construction firm Daniel Owen.
His disappearance was ‘out of character’ said his Miss Mulcahy when an appeal was launched to find him.
An online fundraiser has raised more than $100,000 to bring Mr Day back to his home in Aotearoa, New Zealand, with almost 2,000 donations.
The money will also be used to support the family in their journey to the UK.
A message on the fundraiser last week read: “We are completely overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and outpour of support”
Following the discovery of the body last week, Avon and Somerset Police issued a statement which said: “Our hearts go out to them [family] and we thank them for their patience while enquiries into the circumstances of death continue.”
