You simply cannot sit down to an episode of Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off (GBBO) without grabbing a sweet treat to enjoy while you watch the show - it’s the law.
As the much-loved baking competition returns to small screens across the city, new research has revealed Bristol’s favourite cake.

It seems that the North West love to tuck into a soft Victoria sponge, while in the East Midlands the preference is for fruit favoured creations like a Derbyshire Bakewell tart.
But when it comes to a slice of the good stuff, Bristol and the South West are partial to a cheeky walnut and coffee cake, apparently.
The sponge cake is made with additional coffee, usually instant or ‘camp’ coffee, along with walnut pieces. The cake is often filled with flavoured butter icing and topped with more butter icing and walnut halves.

Traditionally, this treat is made with layers of simple, homemade cake topped with creamy brown sugar caramel icing made on the stove with evaporated milk.
The study also found that 20% of people admit to eating cake every week with a further 25% saying they eat it 2-3 times a week.
Zingy lemon drizzle was universally popular across the country, while children enjoy themed cakes based on their favourite TV characters the most.
