A key footbridge linking Bedminster with Bristol city centre has finally closed, with cyclists and pedestrians sent on diversions which see up to 22 mintues added to their journey time.

After several delays, Bristol City Council finally closed Gaol Ferry Bridge over the Avon New Cut this morning (August 22). It is for ‘essential’ works to maintain the long-term future of the bridge.

The closure is set to last six months and will see people sent on diversions - one being over Vauxhall Bridge, the other over Bedminster Bridge. On a journey from Coronation Road to Prince Street Bridge, BristolWorld found going over Bedminster Bridge to be the faster diversion.

BristolWorld has previously reported on traders’ concerns over the impact of the bridge closure. Thomas Sanchis, supervisor at Better Food, said: We’re going to be affected pretty badly.

Today, people on Coronation Street spoke about the closure.

Barbara, from Whapping Wharf, said: ”The closure of the bridge means I have to walk alot further which in one way, I suppose, is not a bad thing but I do walk along way now. I go up to Brandon Hill every day, and it just means that it adsd length on everywhere I want to go and anything I want to do. I only live the other side of the road.”

Calvin, from Bedminster, said, “It is the only place we can get over otherwise we have to go all the way round. People who live opposite the bridge who want to get to Asda, it will be a bit inconvenant if you haven’t got a car - it means they have to do an extra detour.”

In a statement when announcing the closure for the £1m repair work, Don Alexander, cabinet member for transport, said: “We need to carry out these essential works to ensure it remains safe to use now and for many years to come.”

“This work is one part of a wider investment in the harbourside estate aimed at protecting the infrastructure and environment already in place and making the most of the area as a whole.”
