A fire that tore through fenches and sheds before spreading to terraced homes in Hengrove was ‘accidental’, Avon Fire and Rescue has said.

Smoke was visible for miles around as crews from Hicks Gate, Temple, Nailsea, Kingswood, Bath and Portishead battled the blaze which broke out on Griggfield Walk on Wednesday, June 22.

Shocked onlookers reported a shed ‘engulfed in flames’ which spread up a garden towards four houses.

Crews used four jets, three hose reels, a turntable ladder, small gear and gas monitors to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: “The next day, fire investigations officers joined CSI to investigate the cause of the fire.

“Following the investigation, the cause of the fire has been determined as accidental, due to electrical overloading in a shed.”

In total, 10 fire appliances attended the incident, with 33 firefighters on scene. Nobody was injured.
