Areas of Bristol city centre have been turned into a film set for the latest Doctor Who special - with dramatic scenes being shot and David Tennant in the midst of the action.

Filming has started today for the show in St Stephen’s Avenue, Clare Street and Broad Street after days of preparation which saw the unloading of interesting props and set dressing in the area.

This morning social media has been filled with posts showing photographs and videos of the filming. They even include shots of David Tennant, who has reprised his role alongside Catherine Tate for the special Doctor Who production.

He can be seen with a film crew in St Stephen’s Avenue in one picture.

As well as pictures of Mr Tennant, a video shows a dramatic scene where a mini is escorted by a motorcycle with sirens while actors play out a chaotic scene in the open street.

Another, at the bottom of Corn Street, shows a burning car with actors screaming and running around.

Little is known about the special production, although it is thought it could mark the end of the 13th series, due to air later this year.

Cast members confirmed so far include Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor, replacing Josie Whittaker, Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred Mott and Yasmin Finney as Rose.

Among the people following today’s event is Twitter page Tardis Central, which has been putting up images and videos from the filming.

Editor in Chief Jack Trestrial said: “Doctor Who filming in Bristol is a fantastic opportunity for local fans to get a glimpse of the upcoming special episodes with David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
